Abstract
Treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure) with oral tadalafil (Cialis) is well-accepted. The aim of the present study was to investigate the clinical response and safety of tadalafil compared with diclofenac (Vardenafil) in patients with moderate to severe hypertension. Patients were randomly allocated to two treatment groups (tadalafil + diclofenac) and placebo groups (n = 36). The primary outcome measure was the change in blood pressure (BP) from baseline to treatment.
Methods
Eligible patients were treated with either tadalafil (n = 30), diclofenac (n = 30), or placebo. In the tadalafil group, the mean change in BP from baseline was 1.0 mmHg to 4.4 mmHg (n = 30), while in the diclofenac group, the change in BP was 0.8 mmHg to 8.9 mmHg (n = 30). The primary objective of this study was to compare the efficacy of two different treatment groups in patients with hypertension. The secondary objectives were to compare the safety profile of the two groups with respect to safety in patients with moderate to severe hypertension.
Results
The primary outcome measure was change from baseline in BP from baseline to treatment in both the tadalafil + diclofenac group and the placebo group. There was no significant difference in baseline changes from baseline in either the tadalafil + diclofenac group or the placebo group. The mean change from baseline in mean BP from baseline to treatment was -0.4 mmHg, and the change from baseline to treatment was 0.8 mmHg in the tadalafil + diclofenac group. There were no significant differences in change from baseline in mean BP from baseline to treatment between the tadalafil + diclofenac group and the placebo group.
Conclusion
The tadalafil group showed a statistically significant higher mean BP reduction compared with the placebo group (P< 0.01). This was more evident in patients with moderate to severe hypertension (n = 30).
